IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Harry
Gay
September 6, 1938 – December 21, 2025
Brother Harry Gay was born on September 6, 1938, to the union of the late Elder John Gay and Lola Dozier. From early in life, he developed a strong work ethic, a love for music, and a heart for helping others, traits that remained with him throughout his life.
Music became a defining part of Brother Gay’s life at a young age. Alongside his siblings Urail Gay and Martha Gay, and under the guidance of their father, he was part of a group known as The Three Star Trio. As his musical journey expanded, Brother Gay also sang with his sister, Bertha Packnett, as part of The Revelation Singers, a group that traveled and ministered under the leadership of Johnnie Mae Davis. These experiences further shaped his musical depth and commitment.
As his journey continued, Brother Gay later sang with The Dingos and The Idols, recording songs such as “Check Her Out” and “Why Am I So Blue,” recordings that can still be heard today. Known for his smooth and cool sound, Brother Gay’s musical gift left a lasting impression, and his youngest sister admired them all.
Throughout his working years, Brother Gay took pride in honest labor. He was especially proud of his employment with Kansas City School Bus Services, often sharing stories about his work, including driving by his mother’s home just to show off the bus he drove. He also worked as a maintenance supervisor and faithfully served as a laundromat attendant.
Brother Gay had a love for cars and trucks, taking pride in keeping them clean and well cared for. Beyond that, he was known for helping others, often providing transportation to businesses, grocery stores, and food pantries, quietly serving wherever there was a need.
Brother Gay was married to Helen Holly Gay, who preceded him in death, a loss that deeply affected his heart. He took pride in his seven children, while also carrying the sorrow of losing three children who preceded him in death. He loved his children in the ways he knew and was able. One moment he was especially proud of was standing by his son, Andre Nelson, at Andre’s wedding, a meaningful moment he cherished.
Brother Gay joined Redemption Ministries Church of God in Christ under the leadership of his brother-in-law, the late Administrative Assistant Thuston L. Packnett, Sr., whom he loved and respected. Administrative Assistant Packnett was proud of his brother’s gift and often spoke highly of Brother Gay’s musical ability, saying he could not only sing, but he could sang. In later years, Brother Gay was pastored by his nephew, Pastor Thuston L. Packnett, II, with whom he shared a special bond, often remarking on how much Pastor Packnett reminded him of his son.
Brother Gay loved Redemption Ministries and the people there, and that love was mutual. Though he was not always present, he remained connected in heart and spirit. He shared his gift when asked, participated in two church plays, and valued the fellowship of the church family he cared for deeply.
Brother Harry Gay transitioned on December 21, 2025. He is deeply missed by his family, friends, church family, and Mary, whom he affectionately called “May.” His life leaves a legacy of music, service to others, quiet generosity, and enduring love.
